What is the Travel and Transport NDIS Service in Australia?

NDIS disability transportation services are part of your core funding, designed to help you travel around the city using public transport, rideshares, taxis or private transport. This is provided according to your requirements and disability. The program also provides disability-friendly vehicles or escorts to this end.

There are different levels of assisted travel transport NDIS funding. For most participants, there are 3 levels or budgets per year. These are:

  • Level 1: Upto ($1,606)
  • Level 2: Upto ($2,472)
  • Level 3: Upto ($3,456)

Level 1 – You are eligible for this if you are not studying or working. You can use the funding to attend community events.

Level 2 – This is for students or employed individuals. You are also eligible for this if you are working part-time. The funding can be used for travelling for study, work for leisure activities or attending a community event.

Level 3 – Full-time or part-time workers are eligible for this level. You also qualify for this if you are currently studying or looking for work.

Please note that funding for taxi or one-to-one travel is provided for participants who are unable to use funding because of the nature of their disability. You can also check with your NDIS plan manager or our experts as NDIS currently offers some flexibility on the use of transport funds. They can guide and advise you on how best to use your transport funds for comfortable travel.

What is Included in Assisted Travel Transport NDIS Activity?

Your disability travel support NDIS includes both travel and transport. This has two sub-categories:

  • Participant transport
  • NDIS provider travel

Participant transport is when you, the NDIS participant, need to travel somewhere. This may be alone; in which case you are provided for the expenses of travel using public/private transport or specially modified vehicles.

The participant transport is further subdivided into:

  • Participant’s general transport: When you use public or private transport to travel from one place to another. The support worker/driver may or may not need to assist you after you reach your destination.
  • Participant’s ABT or Activity-based transport: This is when you travel from one place to another. The support worker transports you and supports you after you reach your destination.
  • Provider or caregiver travel: When you need a support staff member to accompany you. The NDIS funding is used for the payment of the expense of the support worker’s travel; both labour and non-labour costs.

Your NDIS disability travel support includes but is not limited to:

  • Travel through a cab
  • Travel through public transport
  • Training for use of public transport
  • Caregiver’s expenses to accompany you

FAQs

The transport funding under NDIS is in the core support budget. This helps to fund your travel for study, work or for attending community events. The level of funding is based on your goals and the nature of your disability. To know more about your funding and level, you can get in touch with our experts.
This is when you travel to any community-based event and the caregiver transporting you also supports or aids you after you reach your destination.
If the nature of your disability prevents you from using public transport and you use a taxi or NDIS service provider’s vehicle for travel, you can claim travel assistance with NDIS.
As per the guidelines, the travel time is billed on actual hours and minutes. The worker’s travel time is referred to as the “claim time”. For details on how the travel can be charged and how our support workers can assist you with your travel, you can get in touch with our experts.
After the modifications in 2020, there is a lot of flexibility on how you can use the core support. Transport funding is a valid category or expense under the core support. However, we advise you to check with your NDIS plan manager or our experts before using the same.
